Cato Stonex

After graduating in 1986 from the London School of Economics, of which he is now an Emeritus governor, Cato joined Morgan Grenfell and became an Assistant Director in the European government bond trading division. He left in 1989 for J. Rothschild Investment Management, which is where he began his association with Nils Taube and John Hodson.


Taube Hodson Stonex partners was founded in 1996 and invested in equities on behalf of pension funds and large institutional clients from the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, with peak AUM of $20bn. In 2016 THS partners was sold and in 2017 Cato co-founded Partners Investment Company, from which emerged Stonex Capital Partners and the Partners’ Fund.


Cato holds advisory positions on multiple investment committees, including a University endowment and Family Office Boards, and is a Director of numerous companies, ranging from property companies in Spain and Germany to a luggage maker in Carlisle, and a London spirit company.

James Whitehorn

James began his career in 2010 at Evolution Securities, a FTSE 250 listed corporate broker, as a Treasury Dealer. In 2011 he joined Morgan Stanley, becoming a Portfolio Manager on a global team with $2bn AUM and specialising in Japanese and Asia-Pacific equities, as well as TMT and Industrial sectors. James transferred to Credit Suisse in 2014 following an M&A acquisition and became the Chairman of the Japanese stock selection committee for client investment portfolios, working in both London and Tokyo. James returned to London in 2017 to join Aon Investment Solutions’ Fiduciary Management team, focusing on Research and Due Diligence for Alternative Investments.


In 2018, he joined Cato at Partners Investment Company and is now an Investment Director & COO for Stonex Capital Partners, and the Partners’ Fund.

Marco Di Matteo

Marco began his career in 2014 at Goldman Sachs as an equity research analyst covering the banking sector, eventually assuming the role of lead analyst on the Nordic banks. In 2019 Marco joined AP Moller Holding (the investment holding of the Maersk family) in the investment team working on various private equity transactions.
In 2022 Marco joined Stonex Capital Partners where he currently holds the role of Senior Research Analyst.
